    I own one of the Leica 2x tc's.  I have no problem with it 
optically.  In fact if you look at the resolution charts, generally a 
telephoto lens has lower resolution than a shorter lens and still be 
considered excellent.  Everything in life is a series of tradeoffs.  
Yes the 180 f4.0 will most probably outperform the 90 f2 and the 2x tc. 
But, if weight is a real problem for you then go with it, you should 
find a dealer that will let you take a few exposures with the TC and 
see if the resulting pictures are exceptable to you .
