Jim, personal and exhaustive testing does have its place. Your excellent
write-up on minimizing shake when using a tripod is a prime example. In
other cases personal and exhaustive testing is simply a waste of time. If
someone tells me that me that you need to open up 3 stops when you double
the distance from a flash to the subject, I would hope that I or others
could convince them otherwise based on purely theoretical reasons. Testing
would just be waste of batteries.
