The number of small shoemount strobes without
added electronics for dedication to AF cameras is dwindling fast. Aside from
the ubiquitous and very good Vivitar 283 (which isn't really that small),
there are models from Metz and Sunpak but these are fairly pricey. But,
Vivitar used to make a number of bounce-head auto-thyristor (usually
permitting 2 f-stop choices) strobes that were about 2/3 the size and weight
of a 283, and these turn up in droves at used camera shows usually for
$10-$20. Bring a fresh set of AA's with you to the shows and if the unit
powers up and fires (mount it on whatever camera is at hand) a few times, buy
it. In fact, buy a few of them. I'm still waiting for a $15 Vivitar I bought
3 years ago to poop out, but considering my 25 year-old K-Mart "Focal"
flashgun is still working, that may never happen. If the esthetics bother
you, you could even cut out a Leica logo from a magazine ad and paste it
on...heck, I've seen the same flash unit with a half-dozen different brand
names on it so why not Leica?:)
