Dan, Dont worry about the dull glow, that went out with the Uranium toning of
prints!!Can you imagine trying to aquire a couple of pounds of uranium
yellowcake and claim that you are toning prints. Those proverbial "Men in
Black" would be at your doorstep rather quickly.
Photographic chemicals are rather benign, but don't lick any spoons that are
left unattended.
If you are mixing the divided D-76, there is an improvement on the original
formula, cut the sodium sulphite in 1/2. Use 50 gr/ 1000 ml rather than 100
grams. This gives you a slightly tighter grain ( on Tri-X at least) and it
doesn't require any significant extension of the times. Sod. Sulphite is a
silver solvent and the 100 gram/1000 ml tends to make the grain a bit mushy.
Well, as they said in the 60's " Happiness through chemistry" and it still
works, at least when it comes to filmprocessing!!
