I strongly suspect this is an urban myth, but then I've only examined
several dozen of these lenses over the past ten years:  this may be like
the mysterious 'gassing' factor which seems to happen only on the West Coast.

No, I've never seen this.  I have one, and have used it extensively.  It is
my normal 90mm lens, though I have a 4/90 collapsible for portabilty and a
2/90 for low-light.
