In 1980, Leica made 74000 lenses. In 1997 : 20000 at the most. 
In 1982, Leica made 36200 R4. In 1996 : 10000 R7 at the most.
As you say, "hold your petty whinges to yourself and stick to a lesser breed".
Personally, I'm brimming with the new Nikkor 2.8/28-70 on a F (or N)90x.So
I keep my M6 and I move on.
BTW : the F 90 has an 4 f.p.s. embodied motor for nearly the price of the
virtual leica motor drive.With that, Leica is going to hit the deck unless
they try to embody a motor in the R8.
