Nigel makes a good point.  The distinction between amateur and professional is
not necessarily a qualitative one.  

Professional photographers do have the advantage of generally being able to
devote more time to photography.  Of course there are exceptions to this also,
I suppose.  An amateur may have an advantage in having more freedom -
unconstrained by needed to satisfy one's client or employer.  However, there
is nothing to keep a professional from also taking photos that are outside his
professional responsibilities.
