Your post was rather interesting in regards to the gamma question.  I have a
windows machine and is set up for a 1.8 gamma setting.  I exchange files
between it and a mac every now and then, and there is NO difference in the
images between the two. Maybe you should check out your brightness contrast
settings and then get a gamma test program.  The only reason why I know my
monitor is at a 1.8 is that I use a monitor setup in Micrografx picture
publisher 8 and paint shop pro 5 and have found out that my monitor has a
1.8 gamma setting.
