The procedure you describe sets the focus at hyperfocal. If you 
don't have the DOF scale, just set focus directly at hyperfocal. 
Assuming a circle of confusion of .025mm, the following will give 
approximate hyperfocal distances in meters for 28mm, 35mm, and 
50mm focal lengths.

Just remember the numbers 30, 50, and 100.

28mm: Divide 30 by the f-number.
35mm: Divide 50 by the f-number.
50mm: Divide 100 by the f-number.

For example, when using a 50mm focal length at f/11, set the focus 
at 100/11, or about 9m.

Hope this helps. Maybe someone else knows a simpler way.
