I am not a manufacturing engineer but can think of two reasons Leitz
would produce all components.

1. Availabilty, when you are small and rely on a single outside supplier
your production can grind to a halt with a single hiccup from the vendor
of a 2 cent part.

2. Quality, less an issue today with better understanding of statistical
means to measure quality of delivered parts.
