This July/August issue that I picked up today hot off the press ($9) has sure panned out. This is the magazine with that Red Dot so close to our hearts on it. And also read on this months cover is a banner that says: Oskar Barnack. But other things in this excellent issue are at least as interesting to me than the Oskar Barnack Prize 1999. The truth about the Leica type "0" Nullserie by a Russian philologist. "Visit to the Pope" Pope Johannes Paul ll is presented 3 black and white 11 by 14's taken by Eric Lessing with a Leica in the '50s by an American couple. "Asked whether the Holy Father would like to receive a Leica Minilux, the answer was positive." "..a memorable moment also for the Holy Father who is doubtless susceptible to good visual communication and who now has the possibility, whenever he feels like it, to take pictures with a Leica." An interesting story. The Dreamagon is a quite novel 90mm F/4 lens to fit your Leica SLR with a T adaptor. It feature four click stops for variable soft focus effect. The illustrations are quite impressive as I am generally not at all a fan of fuzzy wuzzy's as AA used to call them. The quality of reproduction is top notch thru out and the typeface and design are excellent in my opinion. They are undoubably reading our razzes here an the Lug and have hopped to it. Not a special "nothing in it issue" this time. A full page article/letter on our recent darkroom to digital topic by Jens Gathmann. Charming. A big good article on "Film damage through X-Ray controls as week discussed today. And first but not least: "Mysterious Tibet." Gorgeous It's funny how many OK magazines seem to unintentionally sometimes come out with super issues. Mark Rabiner
