Because it beats the crap out of missing focus altogether in tough shooting 
situations. That it increases a pros take (i.e. $$$) and can help get the 
picture in all sorts of odd situations, like when the camera is not up to 
the eye. (I've done it, quite handy).

And, reason #1 - You can turn it off when you don't need it. But you can't 
turn it on if you don't have it.
