Canon did the same thing when they replaced their awesome 20-35 2.8L 
with the mediocre 17-35 2.8L.  I have never used one but have friends
who claim it is soft, has much barrel distortion and such...the 20-35
was one of the best corrected 20's I have ever used.

Now the Canon 24 1.4L is a different story...a great lens, great
companion for the Noctilux...but I still want a 35 summilux
ASPH.....just can't justify that kinda ccccost right now.
