Subject: [Leica] "Wide" Portraits/John Loengard

Folks,

I've just had the privilege of talking with John Loengard
regarding his discussion of "wide" portraits in his
book; "Pictures under Discussion". Privilege in the
sense that John Loengard was gracious enough
to take a call from a *rank* amateur. And, he did give
me permission to post what I'm about to share ;-)!

First of all, when he was shooting, during the time of this
book, he worked *principally* with three lenses ( although,
he made it clear that he used other focal lengths ); a.)
Nikkor 35 PC. b.) 55 Micro Nikkor. c.) 65mm Visoflex.
Today, he's added a 60 Micro Nikkor & uses that a lot.

He did make clear that the bulk of his work is with these
four lenses. What's interesting is the range; 35mm thru
65mm! Who says, a 35 thru 70 zoom is limited ;-)!

His use of the "wide" portrait term is in conjunction with
usage of the 55, 60, & 65 focal lengths. It's his belief
that this focal length range is ideal for close portrait work
& shows off the facial features in a more natural way
than a shorter *or* longer lens!

That's my understanding ;-)!
