When the rear element of the lens is VERY close to the film plane, the incident light to the edges is at such an angle as to project under the edge of the gate. With the SA the image area on the negatives have nearly no space between them. The first time I saw this I was sure that there was something wrong with my camera until I figured out what was happening.
