I used to use the old Nikon leather straps on everything. I recently got
out my old Nikkormat and was surprised how short that strap is. When I'm
carrying the camera alone I always carry the camera hanging from my left
shoulder with my thumb hooked through the strap and my hand around it. Very
secure that way. Now I'm using a 4' plain nylon strap. For me length
doesn't matter that much. Using the thumb method even the slippery nylon is
secure enough. I'm not through looking for the ultimate strap yet. It
about drove me nuts when I wore it under a jacket the other night. Kept
slipping down my arm as I ate dinner. Mostly I use a small bag - a LowePro
Nova Micro. It holds the camera, meter and one extra lens. I just slip it
out of the open bag when I want to take a shot. I can close it up when I
get into the car and it keeps everything together.
