Jim,
the Leica viewfinders have a reputation for being very accurate, rather
than merely 80-85%-ish.
Of course, you could work with the 35 finder being careful to frame inside
the lines but if you want a 40mm finder the choices are limited. The
easiest route is an old Leitz finder with the continuous masking design,
set it between 35 and 50 andd you'll be about right. You could always check
the field of view by taping some ground glass or tracing paper over the
film aperture, set the camera to B and leave open (on a cable release) this
image can then be compared to that through the finder which can be adjusted
until the same. Mark that point on the finder and have it engraved if you
wish!

I own an M3 and have a 3.5 cm accessory viewfinder. I know that the field
of
view of most viewfinders and the M's built-in framelines covers only a
fraction of the actual photo area - I'm contemplating the purchase of an
other
40mm Summicron (which I used on a CL years ago and loved) and was wondering
how the 3.5 cm viewfinder would match up with the 40 Summicron. Would their
fields-of-view be approximately the same? Thanks in advance.
