I have bought a new type of legal PX-625 type of batteries from Fargo http://www.fargo.com that work as well as the old type. They are a bit expensive, but OTH they last more than 2 years.
I am also using the CRIS adapter on 3 MR4 meters without any problems.

As long as these products can be bought, I would never rebuild a M5 for lots of $$...
