Howard,

Both Adrian Bradshaw and myself had a few focusing screens 'treated' by Bill
Maxwell.  Bill was reluctant to disclose his method of brightening the
screens, but the results were nothing short of amazing.  We had a few Leica
R (pre-R8) and Canon EOS screens treated for our Leica R6/R6.2 and EOS RT,
as these two cameras suffered from a relatively dim viewfinder with their
standard screen.
