I recently asked Leica NJ how much it would cost to upgrade a one cam (R
cam only) lens to 3 cams. I was quoted $ 450 plus tax. It is no longer
economic to de-ROM a new R lens.

On the other hand, the parts cost to put a 3rd cam on a 2 cam lens is
only about $ 55.

I would not be at all surprised if Leica puts R-only lens mounts on the ROM lenses to prevent using the lens on a Leicaflex so that the camera's cam follower can't damage the contacts. The good news is that many current lenses can be un-ROMmed and Leicaflex metering cams added.
