It was adopted because that is the ratio of aperture to focal length, and ratios are traditionally written as x:y

The reference to a "28mm F 1.2" is probably meant to read...."28mm F 1:2"

I don;t know why this system was ever adopted, but the use of a dib=git 1
and colon was very common .....

Of course, the lens is an F2.0  or is that F2,0 ?
