the questions you asked indicate that it would be very wise to get a
book such as the Ansel Adams Basic Guide that describes darkroom work,
or Fred Picker's books. They will answer your questions and put
everything in order. . 

It is one thing to ask "what are pitfalls to avoid in loading film into
an M6." But when the question is so global, such as pitfalls to avoid in
flying a plane, or sailing a boat, or darkroom work, it is a good idea
to approach the subject methodically, and there are a number of
excellent books and courses that do just that.
