I think that the proper work flow would be to scan at best quality, do your
"spotting" then save as either a TIFF or Genuine Fractals file and archive
that.  The point of an archive is to have the maximum quality saved, just
like a well processed negative sleeved in an archival sleeve.  Once you have
gone down to a 8 bit file you have lost part of the orchestra.

Then, once you have the raw file saved, do whatever other adjustments you
need to do and save that file also under a different name.
