Paul,

I owned 3 different 28/2.8 Nikkors in the 80s. One performed worse than my 
43-86 zoom. One was decent. One was a gem. All three were AIS and about the 
same serial number. I always figured Leica was more consistent. Can't rely 
on experience there. I could never afford to own 2 of the same Leica R 
lenses! Fortunately, I've never been disappointed in one.
