One word: Opera.
www.opera.com
Multi-platform browser & e-mail client.
On my cable modem & Win2K PC, it's about 20% faster to load any and all
websites.
The current PC version 6 is really, really nice. 3.2mb download for the
program!
I have used it off and on since version 2.x, and it has never crashed my
machine.
A friend of mine has used it on Mac's for 8 months now with nary a problem.

Hi Mark:

I just switched to 9.1 from 8.6 and haven't had any trouble with
Netscape 4.7. I did have trouble in that DeskTape and MS Word, along
with a couple of utilities no longer work. But photoshop, illustrator,
etc., work well. I found an update on the MS site to fix Word but
nothing yet for DeskTape.

It seems to me that one of your recently downloaded plug-ins has/is
corrupting your preferences.

I agree with the others that you should wipe your system clean of all
Netscape stuff but first create a separate folder to store your
bookmarks , your mail folder and your address book if it hasn't been
lost.

Before you do any of the above, except for saving the mail folder, etc.,
try trashing your "Netscape" preferences folder, within the preferences
folder, in the System Folder. Empty the trash and then restart the Mac
and then Netscape. If that works then it was just a case of preference
corruption... perhaps by a plug-in installer program.

Regarding mail...

I have a mail folder which is almost 100mb in size as it goes back to
1996 and I've kept all of my ebay buys/sells along with a lot of RUG/LUG
and other messages with technical information worth saving.

Since it's beginning to look as though Netscape may never produce
anything better than 4.7, and since IE now runs some sites much faster
than Netscape, I'm trying to decide what to do about mail. My problem
is that I use both PCs and Macs and regularly move my mail folder and
bookmarks.html-bookmark.htm between the two platforms. Outlook Express
seems to be a virus/worm magnet on the PCs so that's not an option to my
way of thinking. I haven't tried Eudora for a few years but will
probably do so soon because, Netscape is becoming too slow... try
visiting http:/www.cnn.com using Netscape 4.7 and then IE and you'll see
what I mean.

My son uses another Mac-only mail program along with using IE, if you
want information about it then let me know and I'll ask him.

Good Luck,

Jim
