I think it has to do with the size of the CCD. Although my Mikkor 17-35
F2.8 was designed with the D1 in mind.

From what I understand standard film lenses do not play nice with CCD
arrays.
The design for CCD compatible lenses is slightly different. Maybe
someone where
has some expertise regarding that issue.
