Michael:

Yes I use the incident reading.  That is the purpose of an incident meter, 
it reads the light falling on the object, not reflecting from it.  The 
colour of the bird does not matter.

In the case of spot metering with the R8, if I want a white object white on 
the slide, I typically meter off the white and open up 1 1/2 stops.
