Subject: [Leica] OT mailing list post ownership
From: Javier Perez <summarex@yahoo.com>

Hi Everyone
I've been thinking
When messages are posted on mailing lists, who owns
them? Is there any chance that the list provider can
copyright them? I'm not worried about the LUG since
it's a volunteer community service but frankly those
other commercial list providers like Yahoo or Topica
certainly wouldn't be above concealing archives from
anyone who doesn't want to pay for a future "enhanced
service". This is more than a trivial issue as photo
and other specialist mailing lists are now considered
valuable sources of info for shoppers wanting opinions
on particular items as well as market analysts. As far
as I know I've never granted ownership of my posts on
those lists to anyone (not that they are worth that
much!) and assume they are in the public domain but
I'm not sure. Does anyone know how this works? A
lawyer perhaps!
Javier
