I am not a dog owner or lover but my sister is. She has a pit bull/blue 
heeler cross that was terribly abused before being abandoned. It took 
her eight years of work but the dog is better than a normal dog now and 
completely safe around children. I must say I thought she was crazy at 
first but I was very impressed at the outcome.

A good deal of hard work and time and not something that just anyone 
could do.
