Most of the time I do make a rough estimate of the distance, sometimes I have to be quite careful (like on my portrait of a bouncer in London, shot at f2.8 and 1/30). In most situations the results are surprisingly accurate. Of course, if the subject is moving and the light is such that f2.8 is needed, then the Rollei is certainly not a good instrument. But overall, I will say that I achieve a higher percentage of correctly focused shots with the Rollei than I did with an autofocus P&S when I used that as my pocket camera.
