Thank you.  One difference is the spot metering field on the R8 is so
well-defined by the circle in the viewfinder.

At any rate, it's results that count, and I always enjoy yours.

No, you're not wrong.  They meter the same.  Here is what Leica says:

"The camera measures the light reflected by a white spot in the center of
the first shutter curtain. That spot has a diameter of 12 mm and it covers
approx. 13% of the full film format."

I just try to put that 13% in the center on something that is about
photo-gray.  The meter on the M6's and 7's does seem to be more affected by
back light than the meter on the R's.  Even if the bright light is outside
of the 13% center, it seems to affect the exposure.  I might be wrong, but
that's the way it seems to work for me.
