They get a good share of the selling price (and people like me pay a lot more than what they are asking, about $3.50). They are on the up-and-up, maybe not God's best children, but willing to try and make a buck without outright begging. Anyway, the one here in Gothenburg (Göteborg) has a high standard of photography and one of the most modern printers is one of the sponsors, to the print is _very_ high quality. The journals are usually about the situation in the particular locality they are sold in, not syndicated material. So basically, they are localized "Life" and "Look", photojournalism without really having that as a business idea. I had forgotten about Mother Jones ... thanks!
