Joseph,

I believe you are confusing size and resolution. You are right in saying 
that monitors usually resolve only 72 ppi, but what really matters is 
the size. For example, my monitor is 1024 pixels wide (and 768 pixels 
tall), so by sizing the image to 750 pixels wide I can fit it in 
comfortably. The only meaning of the 72 ppi resolution is that the image 
is 750/72=10.4 inches wide, but the key are the overall pixel dimensions.
