My favorite Gene Smith book is Minimata.

But the best review of his work is "Let Truth be the Prejudice."

My third favorite has come compelling qualities: "W. Eugene Smith - 
Master of the Photo Essay." A very interesting part of it is that it's 
mostly small thumbnail photos of complete photo essays, including the 
complete Pittsburgh Essay. One of the two times it's ever been printed. 
Even though the photos are small, you certainly get a great view of his 
thinking in how he would take his photos and put them together as 
essays.
