Well, visit B&H Photo in Manhattan's Midtown some time. It's busy as hell
and has an online site as well! PS I don't have any financial interest in
them, just a satisfied customer. It appears that a large specialty
photography/multi-media specialty shop can succeed. Think Home Depot,
Lowe's, Staples, Borders, and other category killers. I wonder if something
similar, that was broader than just photography, i.e., a multi-media
category killer store can succeed. At least Manhattan is able to support
one.

To me, the evolution in the marketplace is a devolution of the mystery and
barriers to capturing, processing, and presenting images. today, while
digital for the consumer doesn't hit the quality peaks that film can,
digital can be characterized as "good enough" technology for a large
percentage of consumer uses. When the cost of better quality image capture
and presenation hits consumer price points, consumers will adopt those
products. Active consumers don't seem to have a problem with replacing
high-tech gadgets periodically.

AGS
