Richard,
It's my experience so far with the Digilux 1 & 2, along with the Canon G5,
if one is in a locked down position from a tripod in a studio or shooting
peeling paint, rocks, ferns and non-breathing things all the techie stuff is
fine to learn and use.

As in using the histogram and other like operations it's fine.

However, in reality shooting, people, action and many other disciplines of
using the camera in happy snap mode and non-studio use, it's best to turn
off all the thing-a-me- jig bits and shoot on auto. Where you'll find the
camera is as good as an M,  ((OK close.)) ;-)  Once you use it enough and
become familiar with the feel and function of the camera you'll have a great
set of photos to enjoy.

If ever there's a situation of KISS, it's using the digital camera until you
have a fair amount of experience with it. And quite frankly I find it no
different to working with a computer, use it and use it, again and again.
Eventually you'll learn what all the bells and whistles are about! Certainly
where and when they make sense to use.
