Found it!   May 1995:  "MAY James Herriot, author of such animal loving
British classics         as "All Creatures, Great and Small", is attacked by
a herd of  black-faced sheep as he tries to stop them from eating plants in
his Yorkshire garden. Herriot, whose real name is Alf Wight, suffers a
broken leg."
