Adam,
I use the V/C lens.  It really is a very good compromise lens and at a
price under $350 it is a stunning bargain.  It is a useable lens at 4.5
but improves a great deal and in fact it's best aperture is 5.6-8.  Zone
focusing is not a problem unless you are trying to focus on something
under 2 feet.

Except for the really new photographer or the one on a truly tight
budget, everyone should have an ultrawide lens just for the fun of using
them at inappropriate times.
