Dan, what you have is a special baseplate on the IIIc to  which you attach a 
special flash gun. The flash gun has a unique dove-tailed  grove on the 
battery case that slides into the groove on the  baseplate. All this is 
explained in 
the 12th Edition [1951] of Morgan &  Lester's "New Leica Manual,' pages 98 
and 99. It notes, for example, that "the  rules engraved on the side of the 
special baseplate correspond to the various  shutter speeds of the camera.''
   I had one of these special flash units many years ago but  traded it for 
a 
15 in. tape recorder and then -- after many years -- tried to  buy it back 
but it was long  gone. 
   You can, of course, change the  special baseplate to a normal one -- and 
thus have a normal IIIc  -- or try to find the missing flash gun, although 
the 
gun takes flash  bulbs, so there you are. Regards, bob cole
