I loved that camera right up until the moment I stepped on it :-) I'd get an inexpensive Nikon body (N55?) with a kit zoom. Pretty inexpensive and highly functional. Built in flash. Something you can grow into in bits and pieces. Otherwise, a Canon A75 is a little less than $200 and works pretty well for an inexpensive digicam. Personally, I wouldn't go hunting down any older or antique gear for a youngster unless I had something already laying around and gathering dust. Even then, the young folks I know are very feature/ product/brand aware by the time they're 12. They typically know exactly what they want already :-) James T.
