I used to think the same ,that knowledge was not required in these matters.
recently i,m not so sure and feel that photographs are like a language that 
you need some knowledge to understand a pictures meaning.
knowledge i lack.
Like in classical music .It takes a trained ear to resolve the subtleties of 
it.
