I'll be home in a few hours ... I'll check out mine. I've never tried to
go much further than a little past the bottom-out of the highlights. I
think you just want to get it past the point where it flattens out.

I usually look at the bottom curve too. As long as it 1) makes it down to
the bottom and 2) doesn't shoot back up again, then I've captured all of
my highlight detail.

I usually scan b/w but it could be that it was in scanning color that I
ran into this solid wall to the right. I don't know why either. The scan
worked just fine.
