My mother had just come back from a trip to Europe. She went to church (not anything my father was real keen about) and he died while she was gone. He managed to call the ambulance and for the first time ever, the dog let someone come into the house without the door being opened by him or my mother. By the time church was out, he was gone. Same background as your father: USAF, lifer. I felt the kid in me become less. But I still have my mother. I know it must be hard. It sounds like your memories are warm and comforting.
