Recently I supplied a LUGger in the US with a new R-D1 and I had to reject four cameras before I found one that had perfect rangefinder/focusing. This is very time consuming since it takes hours to check the rangefinder thoroughly. I understand this is a QC issue and many cameras do not leave the factory with the rangefinder properly calibrated. If you have an R-D1 that focuses perfectly, stick to it and never let Epson replace it should it develop an unrelated problem.
