Subject: [Leica] More on Pushing C-41 films

Lew,
I would be interested in just what machine he has, and whether it has
been modified to let him control developer times. For a typical C-41
lab set up first developer is 90 seconds at 37.8 C so it would not take
much of a change to add a one stop push.

My C-41 guy doesn't mind the push at all, and certainly does _not_ have
a
dip & dunk set up. The entire machine sits in plain view in his shop and
seems to do 1 roll at a time. While I don't know what adjustments he
makes
to get the push, they're clearly something he can do from the console of
his
automated unit.

Lew,
Most of the C-41 machines are roller transport and are designed to run
hundreds of thousands of rolls of film within the standard C-41 specs.
Timing is gear driven with a single speed motor. Some C-41 machines can
be
modified with a different gear set on the developer racks to change the
time. Frequently, labs that do a lot of B&W have adjusted older
C-41 machines to run variable times so that they can "push" B&W film.

As to why most labs don't push film, do you really think the owners want
to
risk tens of rolls of film when the 18 year old left the wrong developer
time on the variable machine?

Dip and dunk lines are completely different and can be set to run
whatever
needs to be done. I suspect that the labs that push C-41 are using dip
and
dunk predominately.

I feel that "can't be done" is unlikely. After all, the C-41 specs,
temps
and times do change on occasion. Any machine that can't be adjusted is
faced
with obsolescence.

At the photo store, where I usually let my B&W C-41 films processed,
they
told me pushing can't be done with their (small) C-41 engine, and needs
a
manual job. They had to send it to their central store. So the quality
of a
pushed B&W film is quite depending on how good this manual job is done.
It
costed me much more than the regular processing, and the quality was
mediocre. I had the impression that they were just bored to do
extra-orders
on film and would have preferred to sell me a digital camera and
printer...
