The BBC Radio Show came first.  The books followed, being published in the
decade or so after the conclusion of the BBC radio show.  

I am sorry to have to be the one to tell you, but Douglas Adams died almost
four years ago, in May, 2001.  He might well have drafted a first version
of a proposal for the movie's script, but, given the Hollywood way of doing
business, I am certain that rewrites were going on while they were filining
this turkey.  His impact on this monstrosity seems minimal, at best.
