Regarding Nikon's bid to mimic the Famous Stupid Apple Trick and bring it to
the camera industry, Nathan writes:

"I certainly hope they reconsider, because I would hate to see Canon become
a quasi-monopoly."

No need to wait to hate, Nate. A speaker at recent photo seminar offered
this statistic, "Canon now sells 75% of all digital cameras." (He might have
even said 85%.) In terms of volume, whichever percentage it is translates
into more digital camera sales that all other manufacturers. Combined.

Here's what that means. Canon has the revenues and resources to accelerate
technological advances far beyond those any other manufacturer. I can easily
imagine the Canon technoids testing, refining and discarding a sixpack of
potential digital advances while another manufacturer is still futzing
around trying to pop the top (or back) on its first digital SLR.

Why, mercy, that's nearly Leica content, speaking metaphorically.
