If I understand what I am told by my friends the populations are  
unlikely to recover. The cod fisheries have not recovered and  
research indicates that as the fish stocks are devastated there is  
rapid growth in other species which we do not kill but have the same  
diet as the cod. The cod's traditional feeding grounds are now  
populated by other non-exploited species and the hoped for re-growth  
of the cod stocks is not happening.
Iceland have strict controls of fishing, there is a fishery officer  
on each boat I am told. Many years ago this was thought by many to be  
an unreasonable restriction but now Iceland's waters are the only  
traditional cod fishing grounds which still have sustainable cod stocks.
