The glass isn't soft I hear, it's the early single coating that is so
fragile. It's also what gives the lens (and others of this age) their
distinctive B&W signature.

I have a Cannon Sumarex clone in black and silver, but my Summarex is a
postwar chrome. Of interest is it's serial # (7323XX) that makes it a 1949
lens (Hove) but it shows unmistakable signs of having a LTM/M adapter glued
on somewhere in the 50's probably. I have heard that quite a few of the
unsold LTM high end lenses from the late 40's and 50's were returned unsold
from dealers and factory upgraded to M with an adapter glued or installed
with a grub screw. This one came to me without the adapter but in removing
it, the chrome came with it and the mounting surface had to be smoothed back
down. This is why I got it for a reasonable price with shade, caps, case and
finder. The coating is in good shape.
