I haven't had the problem before, but I have seen it in other's work. 
There is a bit of a dark "glow" around the figure and the edges of the 
image.  I think this is due to a dust buildup in the optics of the 
scanner.  Its dark because you are scanning negatives.

Beautiful photos and beautiful daughter by the way.
